8 Day Mount Rwenzori Hike

8 Days

Itinerary

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up by a representative from our company who will be your driver guide who will brief you about your trip. You will then hit the road to transfer to kasese with lunch enroute arriving in the evening and check in to our service of accommodation. Dinner and overnight.

After an early morning breakfast you will start off with the trek from Trekkers Hostel in Kyanjiki 12 Kilometers from Kasese past Kilembe and the best time to start off with this trek is 8:30am. You will then walk 2.2km to UWA rangers’ post at 1,727 metres. Here the rangers will brief you on the days activities and rules of the National Park. This walk is expected to take 5 to 6 hours and covering a distance of 8.6km. During this trek you will sight a number of bird species and a variety of different try species as well sighting troops of black and white colombus monkeys or blue monkeys as they dash through the trees. Later we shall camp at Samalira Camp. Dinner and overnight.

After an early morning breakfast, we proceed walking at 8:15am and initially climbing steadily then cross a small stream and the climb becomes steep for about 200 metre up a narrow moss covered ridge. The thick moss covering the ground and rocks under the giant heather trees is spectacular and we ask you to help preserve this pristine environment by keeping to the pathway. With the amazing views from the top we look across the many ridges and valleys far below. You can as well see Kilembe village deep in the valley and across Lake George. After a relatively short climb the trail becomes less steep as we pass over Chavumba then cross a small flat valley to climb up a steady ridge through moss covered trees and misty forests to the top of the ridge. We later descend steadily for about one kilometer before descending a steep drop with good footing of 200 metres into the Nyamwamba valley and a well earned lunch break at Polys Rock Shelter. After lunch we climb steadily above the Nyamwamba River for 1.6 km though old giant heathers covered in old mans beard moss to Kiharo Camp.

After an early breakfast we climb a short steep climb through the narrow valley with large moss covered rocks. This area is stunning as you weave through the narrow passes near the foot of towering peaks till you reach the wider upstream Nyamwamba River. You will then climb steadily along the valley floor with small bogs and many giant lobelias. Both sides of the valley are lined with sheer cliff faces as we near the confluence of the Nyamwamba and Namusangi valleys. Our next camp is above Lake Kopello which will be our third camp and has spectacular views looking down the valley of nine glacier lakes, the Namusangi valley. Dinner and Overnight

Day 5 :
6 km Walk.

After an early morning breakfast, we start off by climbing up a long valley with fantastic views of the Namusangi valley. We will later turn right to climb the summit of Weismans and as we look behind we see Kachope Lakes far below then just as we near the top we see Mt Baker seemingly towering above. From Weismanns, we can take a gentle walk across the moss covered domed shaped ridge to Stella Park. We later return to our third camp the night.

After an early morning breakfast, we start descending via the Namusangi valley across open moreland and large areas of tussock grass. This is a valley floor, it is rather wet and at times quite boggy. It is a good idea to have rubber boots for this section. We continue down the valley passing several small waterfalls and moss covered valley until we reach the steep rocky section above Mutinda with fantastic views of Mutinda Peaks directly ahead. We turn left as the river drops over a sheer cliff to the Mutinda valley to walk down several steep slopes until we reach the valley floor. Here we again cross the river before climbimg up to the Mutinda Rock shelter where we are to spend our night. Dinner and over night

After an early morning breakfast, we set off at exactly 7am and start descending down a series of rocky streams and valleys often passing or rock hopping across the rocks to Kalalama camp and as we near Kalalama camp, we pass through a beautiful valley dotted with Giant Lobelia. With lunch en-route we continue through the bamboo forest crossing the ridge climbing to samalira camp with a short break and later continue to the rangers post and arriving at the post by 3pm, we sign off and walk down to Trekkers Hostel. Spend the night and have dinner in Kasese.

After a morning breakfast, you will sign out of your service of accommodation and head back to Kampala where you will be dropped off at you area of accommodation. This will mark the end of our trip.
