Itinerary
Early in the morning we will pick you up in your hotel and drive/Fly to Mikumi National Park.
We will have lunch on the way to Mikumi and arrive in the park around afternoon for a half day game drive. Later check-in at your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Mikumi National Park is one of the southern national parks and Tanzanias fourth- biggest park. It is just a couple of hours drive from Tanzanias biggest city Dar-es- Salaam and borders Selous Game Reserve. Its abundant wildlife draws frequent comparisons to the famous Serengeti.
Today you can enjoy a full day game drive. We will start early in the morning, have our lunch boxes with us and make some rest somewhere in the park. Late afternoon we will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Wildlife in Mikumi National Park
The park has a great variety of animals and most visitors come to this National Park aiming to spot the ‘Big Five’ – cheetah, lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Also hippos live in a pair of mud pools and are one of the highlights.
Lions overlook their grassy kingdom, which is traversed by herds of zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo. Giraffes forage in the isolated acacia stands on the edge of the Mkata River, and shady islets are also favored by Mikumi elephants. Mkata Foodplain is perhaps the most reliable place in Tanzania to see the mighty eland, the largest antelope in the world. The equally impressive great kudu and sable antelope stay in the miombo-covered foothills that rise up on the borders of Mikumi.
Birds in Mikumi
Mikumi is a good place for bird lovers as it is home to more than 400 different species of birds! The Mkata River offers majestic views of fishing Open-billed Storks. Marabou stork, Red-billed oxpeckers, Black-bellied bustard, Francolin, Cattle egret, Guinea- fowls, Hornbill and Malachite Kingfischer are common birds in Mikumi
National Park. The most colourful species are the Yellow-throated long claw, the Lilac- breasted roller and the Bateleur eagle. European migrants are common in Mikumi National Park during the rainy season.
Today we will have an early morning and visit a Maasai Village. The Maasai tribe is probably the most famous amongst the 120 tribes in Tanzania.
With this visit you can immerse yourself in the culture, colours, and traditions of the Maasai. The Maasai live in small huts, in the middle of nature, where lions, elephants and many other animals also live. But the Maasai know how to protect their own territory - and that of their goats and cows - in harmony with nature. Learn how they manage to live in the middle of nature and what their everyday life looks like. Try your luck to make a fire, enjoy their beautiful songs and maybe take a chance and see how high you can jump. An experience you should not miss on your Tanzania trip.
After your Maasai experience, we go back to the hotel for a late breakfast and the checkout before we head slowly back to Dar-es-Salaam. En route, enjoy the natural beauty of Morogoro town and the wonderful view of Uluguru range mountains. Lunch will be eaten at a restaurant on the way back, before we reach Bagamoyo town, again for your overnight stay and further holiday.
